Psychological Services in Yuma

Careful assessment and evidence-based therapy for school-age children, adolescents, and adults living in Yuma and the surrounding county.

Families in Yuma usually come to us with a question rather than a symptom: why a bright fourth grader cannot finish an assignment, or why an adult's worry has quietly narrowed a life over many years. Answering that kind of question carefully is what a psychological evaluation is for, and it is where our work most often begins. Once we understand what we are looking at, therapy has something firm to stand on.

Specialized testing has not always been easy to arrange in this corner of Arizona without a long drive north. Dr. Lusk has consulted for the Yuma Elementary School District and Crane Elementary School District since 2015, and we have experience supporting professionals and families connected with Yuma Proving Ground and Onvida Health. Our range runs from individual and family therapy through forensic, educational, employment screening, and neuropsychological evaluation, so a household does not have to assemble that care from several directions at once.

Psychological Testing and Therapy Services

Assessment sits at the center of this practice, and the six areas below are the ones Yuma clients ask about most frequently.

Psychological & Academic Evaluations

An evaluation answers a specific question about learning, behavior, or diagnosis and produces a written report a school or a treating clinician can use. Suitability and format are settled in consultation.

Child & Adolescent Therapy

School-age children and teenagers are seen at their own pace, with methods matched to age. Parents remain part of the plan, since what changes at home tends to decide what holds.

Autism & ADHD (AuDHD) Testing

Many adults and young people arrive after years of partial explanations. Structured testing separates attention from autism from something else entirely, which is usually what makes the next step obvious.

Anxiety, Stress & Social Phobia

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) treats anxiety as something to practice against rather than discuss. We build graded steps back into the situations that have quietly been ruled out.

Depression & Mood Disorders

Low mood erodes routine first and belief second. Treatment restores activity and daily structure while examining the conclusions a difficult month draws about an entire life.

Parenting Support & Family Systems

When one child struggles, every adult in the house is improvising. These sessions look at routines, consequences, and how two parents can answer the same behavior the same way.

Concerns We Help With

Whether you meet us by secure video from a participating PSYPACT or Counseling Compact state, or in person at our Flagstaff office, these are the concerns we most often help with. Dr. Lusk provides telepsychology in participating PSYPACT states, and Ms. Braun-Dunagan provides counseling in participating Counseling Compact states.

Our Approach to Assessment and Treatment

Guesswork is expensive, so we begin with a clinical interview and, where the question calls for it, formal testing. What comes out of that is a formulation in plain language: what is going on, what is keeping it going, and what would have to change. Therapy from there leans on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and related evidence-based methods, generally weekly across a period of months. We are candid that there is no quick fix. Cultural awareness matters in a bilingual border community, and our recommendations are written to fit the household they are meant for rather than an idealized one.

Secure Telehealth and In-Person Visits

Distance is the ordinary obstacle to specialized care in southwestern Arizona, and secure video removes most of it. A weekly hour held from your own home is confidential, dependable, and far easier to keep through a working week than a round trip up the highway would be.

Some evaluations include instruments that must be administered in person. When that is so, the testing visit is held at our Flagstaff office, and we plan it ahead of time so the drive north is worth making once rather than repeatedly. Which parts of an assessment can be handled by video is decided with your clinician, in consultation, before anything is scheduled.

Students, Schools, and Families

Much of our consultation work has involved local school systems, and we also see students, faculty, and staff from Arizona Western College and the NAU-Yuma branch campus. An independent evaluation is frequently the document that moves an accommodation request forward.

Yuma and the Surrounding Region

Clients reach us from Yuma itself, from Somerton and San Luis, and from the outlying parts of Yuma County. Care is delivered by secure video or, where testing requires it, at coordinated in-person appointments at our Flagstaff office.

Questions We Hear From Yuma Families

Do you test school-age children?

Yes. Dr. Lusk conducts psychological and educational evaluations for children and adolescents, which can clarify questions about attention, learning, or mood and produce the sort of documentation a school district recognizes when accommodations are under consideration.

Can an evaluation be completed by video?

That depends on the referral question. Interviews and history-taking translate readily to a secure visit, while a number of standardized instruments must be administered in person, which for Yuma families means a planned visit to our Flagstaff office. We settle the format together during the initial consultation rather than assuming it in advance.

Do you see adults as well as children?

We do. Adults come to us for anxiety, depression, life transitions, and strained family relationships, and also for diagnostic clarity when a lifelong pattern of inattention or a neurodiverse profile has never been formally examined.

Are appointments available in Spanish?

Yes. Dr. Lusk is bilingual in English and Spanish, so interviews, therapy, and feedback on an evaluation can all take place in Spanish. In bilingual households where the generations are not equally comfortable in one language, sessions sometimes move between the two.
